AEROSPACE 100

Celebration a Century of Powered Flight

Hong Kong will celebrate 100 years of powered flight with Aerospace 100, a programme of events extending over the next 100 days. Announcing the launch of Aerospace 100, Chairman of the Aerospace Forum Asia, Mr. Robert Adams said:

“Hong Kong is one of the great aviation centres of the world. We have unsurpassed airport infrastructure and three top quality home carriers in Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and Air Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s continuing growth as an international and regional hub drives a vigorous and profitable network of supporting industries including engineering and maintenance, cargo handling, logistics and freight-forwarding, aircraft leasing and finance and of course tourism!

It is amazing how far the world of flight has come since that first 120 foot, 12 second flight by Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, on 17 December 1903. Following the success of China’s first manned space flight this is a fantastic opportunity for the Hong Kong community as a whole to take pride in the strength and quality of our aviation industry. ”

Aerospace 100 is coordinated by the Aerospace Forum Asia with the support of the Civil Aviation Department and the Economic Development and Labour Bureau. The first two events are:

  1. Open Day Carnival on 7 December, from 09:00 am – 5:00 pm, at West Kowloon Heliport. This event will be hosted by Helicopters Hong Kong Ltd. to celebrate the opening of the new heliport. The Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, Mr. Stephen Ip, will officiate at the grand opening ceremony at 12:30 pm. The carnival offers a wide range of exciting events such as flight formation, aircraft display, kids zone, food zone & live band entertainment. Free shuttle bus service for the public will be provided between various locations to the heliport.
  2. Hong Kong Aviation Days on Saturday and Sunday, 13/14 December at the apron of the old Kai Tak Airport. Organised by the Provisional Aviation Development Council and the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps this event will feature aircraft displays, marching bands, celebrities, exhibition booths, food and drink, model aircraft flying and classroom based seminars. This combination of fun and educational activities is planned to attract up to 10,000 visitors a day.

Other events planned for Aerospace 100 include:

  1. An Aviation Careers Exhibition
  2. A harbour fly-past and aerobatic display around Chinese New Year
  3. A high-level international conference, organized by Economist Conferences on the theme: “Greater China Aviation in the New Century: Stronger/Higher/Faster” on 19-20 February
  4. A Gala Aviation Dinner to follow the conference on the evening of 20 February.
